I can't leave Malta!

Or else I can’t comeback. That’s what I was told today at the Citizenship Department by a very rude guy. I need a “visa” to be stamped on my new passport which I received some days ago notwithstanding the fact that I already have the freedom of movement, plus, I have to pay 23 euros, two pictures and of course lots of signatures. Did I mention that I had to call because they didn’t bother to reply to my e-mail I sent a week ago and that the freephone wasn’t working? Yes, flimkien kollox possibli, thank you very much for the gift. And to think that I know the song by heart…

Don’t forget that one day I will be able to vote and perhaps I won’t learn the song by heart…and at the end of the day a vote is a vote...

What a shame. a real shame Wen, sometimes I am really disgusted by most of these things when they happen and I only wish to have enough power to make the change. As ever Last weekend I was crossing the "border" between Malta and Gozo. Oh my it was like walking through the tunnel of some concentration camp, stuffy, scrubby, dirty then you see the usual "tal Vapur". I mean come on where have all the standards gone. I am sorry Wen that this has happened and I hope that you get what you merit. Please let us know should you need anything. What a shame

Hi Rozella, this sucks big time :(

Thanks for your support Reuben. I know that the law is the law and that one has to abide by it but this is ridiculous given that I have been living here for over two years and a half, I am married to a Maltese person, I am working, I have a house (or very soon in any case I will sign it all for the loan) and the guy tells me that I wouldn't be able to comeback!! I might as well have kids here and they won't allow me to comeback! That's ridiculous in my opinion. Especially because I have to pay and queue and fulfill all those requirements when I already have the freedom of movement stamped in my previous passport. One would imagine that they did things right the first time, why not just stamp it again? add a sticker or whatever they want to add? No! I have to apply again because Red has to go with me personally of course!...I don't know...I am pretty pissed off.

Out of curiousity, when will you become a "normal" Maltese/European citizen and all these hassles will stop?

I hope its not for life!

I hate red tape too Jen :(

Thanks for the advice Sandro :) Will try LOL

Hi Raphael, welcome :) I can apply to the Maltese citizenship after 5 years of being married to a Maltese citizen, in my case that will be in 2011. In the meantime it sucks to feel that I am discriminated against though I am working, paying tax and probably will give Malta a couple of Maltese kids :) Really, it sucks. I can't have an overdraft or a loan because I am not Maltese, and you see all the hassle to travel...At least with the freedom of movement I can work wherever I want to and live here indefinitely...Keep in touch,

I think the immigration official has not gotten the latest update: Malta is in the Schengen Zone now. You can board a plane to Brussels and return, without going through any immigration controls. You will need your passport only when you check in to show that the air ticket is yours, but nobody will check your immigration status.

Hi Grego!! I am really upset because of all this mess! And so is our friend G who as you can imagine is in a worse position :(

When I talked to some more latin people about this, I got the impression that the immigration authorities don't really know what they are doing...

You know, I hate govt. departments... they exist only to make your life miserable... all the red tape. This cannot, that cannot, bla bla bla...

Poor you have to put up with my rantings. Hope you get your problem sorted out. Take care :)
